Ward County is located southwest of Odessa in West Texas, created in 1887 and organized in 1892. It’s named for Thomas W. Ward, a soldier in the Texas Revolution. Communities within Ward County include Grandfalls, Thorntonville, Wickett and Pyote, the site of a former Air Force base. The city of Monahans serves as the county seat.
